Saints Speak – 10/5/2017 – Respecting All Life

Our virtue focus this shortened week was that of respect for all life.  Our Catholic faith teaches us that God made each of us in his own image and likeness.  All human life is sacred because it is a gift from God.  Our dignity and worth flow from this perspective, making each one of us a part of God’s wonderful creation.  These words gain even deeper meaning when reflecting on the unspeakable tragedy that unfolded in Las Vegas on Sunday night.  Our hearts and prayers go out to all who have been affected and truly saddened by these horrific murders and those who were injured.  Even those who survived will never forget the terror and fear.  We are all a changed people.  We realize and recognize how precious life is.  Our instinctive response is to come together to pray, to mourn and to help; longing to escape into the light from the darkness

This coming week, our 5th grade students will be putting compassion into action through their efforts to help the victims of recent hurricanes and natural disasters by collecting gently used clothing items, and by holding a bake sale.  I hope that we will all rally behind and support them with our donations and participation.  See http://www.ascacademy.org/News/clothing-drive-and-bake-sale-for-natural-disaster-relief for more information.

A great supporter of Catholic education throughout the Diocese of Joliet is the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF).  Many of our students and their families have received awards from the foundation that have made a difference in their being able to attend All Saints Catholic Academy.  On Friday, October 20, All Saints will be participating in the Move Your Feet to Give a Child a Seat campaign for the Catholic Education Foundation.  This campaign is happening in all schools throughout the Diocese.  Students may elect to be out of uniform on this day through a small contribution to the CEF - $1 for the top of your choice, and $1 for the bottom of your choice.  Participation is optional, and if you wish to contribute more, it would be greatly appreciated!  Please see http://www.ascacademy.org/News/move-your-feet-to-give-a-child-a-seat for more details.

Lastly, I would like to invite you to offer the gift of your time and talents by becoming part of one of our School Board committees.  The committees, which consist of Marketing, Finance, Facilities, Education/Curriculum and Catholic Identity, meet once a month.  Please contact me at msantos@ascacademy.org if you have any questions, or if you wish to volunteer.
