Principal's Newsletter - August 20, 2014

What a wonderful moment – we are having our tenth first day of school!   These past ten years have been extraordinary and we are so grateful to all the founders, family, and staff who have made it all happen.  We have now graduated 229 students from our school to spread the message and model of Jesus Christ.

As we start the year, we traditionally remember the beliefs that have established us as the school community we are:

  1. God is the beginning and end of all human existence
  2. Education is essentially a moral endeavor
  3. Parents are the primary educators of their children
  4. The subject of education is the student
  5. Teaching is an intimate communication between souls
  6. Diversity is the cornerstone of our community

Offering an excellent educational program is important, but the child and their relationship with God trumps it all. So, to each of you, I wish a wonderful year of happiness, peacefulness, and learning. Our second decade will be amazing!  We are grateful for God’s blessings.

Hot Lunch and Snack/Lunch Rules

Hot lunch begins on Tuesday, September 2nd.  For classroom snacks, you may only send snacks to school that are from the approved snack list in their original packaging. We will not allow your child to open or eat a snack in their class room that is not on that list. For lunch in the cafeteria, if you send peanut butter or peanut/tree nut products, you must send a wet wipe for your child to wipe their hands and face so they do not inadvertently touch a child with a peanut allergy. Even though the allergy children sit at a peanut-free table, residual from a child eating peanut butter could be dangerous as they play and interact together outside the lunch room.  We are very grateful for your understanding on this life-threatening issue. If we all are careful, we will all be safe.

Playground Improvements from "Call for Cash"

Thanks to the generous "Call for Cash" responses of so many families at the 2014 Dinner Dance Auction, we have begun making improvements in the playground area to increase its utility and fun factor for the students, as well as to improve its security. Game areas have been drawn up and lines painted for one kick-ball court and two 4-square courts, and free-throw lines have been painted under the basketball hoops.  We have seen the levels of excitement and activity these play areas have generated in the past, and we know they will be a big hit once again!

To support the quieter end of playground activity, we have purchased an attractive and sturdy metal chess-and-checker table with built-in seating for four, and we will have game pieces available at the playground door. On the security side, we have installed an electronic "fob" entry mechanism on the center door of Door 3, which will allow teachers to move children inside more quickly and safely in the event security issues occur during outdoor recess times. We will continue to look at other playground improvements in both enjoyability and security, and we are, as always, grateful for your generous support!

2014-2015 All School Panoramic Photo

Lifetouch will be taking our annual All School Panoramic Photo on Friday, August 29 at 1:30 pm.  We invite all of our preschool students to come to school on that afternoon to be a part of this photo.  An order form for the photo is going home with all oldest and only students today, and will also be available at the school website.  Photos may be purchased for $18/$24 per picture.  The Lifetouch order form must be turned in on or before the panoramic picture day for the photo to be produced.  These photos have proven to be a very popular keepsake in past years.  Don't wait until after you see the finished product to order yours!  Past photos are displayed in the hallway across from the gym.

Community Outreach

Thank you ASCA families for supporting the cereal collection at the Meet and Greet. We collected over 160 boxes of cereal for Loaves & Fishes. We also appreciate the impromptu logistics team that loaded the cereal. A genuine display of generosity and teamwork!  We will be collecting pull pop tabs from aluminum cans this year to support the Ronald McDonald House and Edward Hospital. Pop tab donations can be brought in throughout the school year to your student’s classroom.

Technology Committee

The School Board Technology Committee is looking for members to help guide this important area of planning for our school.  Can you help? If so, please email Dr. Renehan at srenehan@ascacademy.org
