Principal's Newsletter - February 11, 2015

Next week we will begin Lent. Hard to believe as Christmas seems almost an immediate memory.   The theme for Lent this year is Make mine a generous heart.  As you know, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the pillars of our Lenten behaviors.  Last year, we focused on prayer and used St. Matthew as a focus to transform our prayer life.  This year we will look at the almsgiving pillar, but in a broader way as a vehicle for our generosity transformation.  Next year, we will look at fasting as the vehicle to change our hearts.

When we say “Lord, make mine a generous heart” we are not saying I have $5 in my pocket - here Lord, use it as you need.  We are saying something else.  We assume that almsgiving is about money, but traditionally and in a number of religions, it means  giving to others as an act of virtue, either materially or in the sense of providing capabilities - for free.  Giving of yourself, unencumbered by expectation of repayment……… you do this a lot already.  But for Lent, please recognize these moments and give them from your heart as a gift to the Lord.   That will create and sustain your “generous heart”.

THANK YOU

Speaking of a generous heart….The students raised $3,745.40 in Change For Change.  Homerooms 1A, 3B, and 7C collected over $300 each.  Wow.  The junior high talent show raised $1,195 as well, so the children of Hogar del Pobre will be getting your check for $4,940.40 as soon as we can get it written!   God bless the generous hearts of our ASCA family.

An Update from the CORe (Culture of Respect):  What is Integrity?

“So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous.  For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it…”  (Proverbs 2:20-21).

Last month our update focused on our first (RICH in) CORe value…Respect.  This month we focus on the second value, Integrity. In our RICH in CORe Values Pledge, we define integrity as a faith-centered quality of being an honest person and having strong moral principle as commanded by God.  A person of integrity strives to do the right thing at all times for Godly reasons (not for praise, awards, or attention).  In teaching integrity to our children, we are showing them how to heed to their developing conscience, and take responsibility for their own actions.  We are helping mold their character and reputation in a positive manner.

How can we teach this value to our children?

  • Reinforce to them that God knows all our actions and everything in our heart—nothing is truly hidden.  If we keep this in mind daily, we will most likely make much better decisions!
  • Offer scenarios of tricky situations that involve making a difficult choice.  Ask your child how he/she might handle it.
  • When your child makes a mistake that puts their integrity at risk, use the situation as a teachable moment, pointing out better choices he/she could have made.  Have a two-sided conversation about the situation rather than giving a lecture, allowing your child to communicate challenges they see in making the right choice.
  • Often the weekly Mass readings offer morality lessons and can be starting points for more discussion with children.
  • Visit http://www.kidsofintegrity.com/  for Bible readings, prayers, lessons and activities that can be completed with children.  Many aspects of integrity are covered, including honesty, kindness, perseverance, self-control, and righteousness.
  • For younger children, Aesop’s Fables are short, fun ways to discuss morals and life lessons.

Watch for next month’s newsletter in which we’ll focus on our third RICH in CORe value… Compassion.

The CORe (Culture Of Respect) is a group of ASCA parents and staff working together to increase the culture of respect at our school. For more information on how to get involved and be a part of RICH in CORe Values team, please contact Maureen Juhas (mjuhas66@gmail.com) or Vicki Perry (vicki.perry@rocketmail.com).
