Principal's Newsletter - January 20, 2016

From the second reading this past weekend –

Brothers and Sisters: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.

As I share the readings each day with the students, I often reflect on the wonderfully fond and respectful way they address each other……most often “Brothers and sisters” and sometimes my favorite, “ Beloved”.   Our culture has lost kindness in conversational address often calling people simply by their last name with no title, or by simply diving right in without any personal acknowledgment.  The major “mass communication” by the disciples was in the letters they wrote to the emerging faithful community which they wrote with kindness, respect and affection. This is lost in our current mass communication.

My second thought on this reading is that they spoke of the gifts that God gives each of us as special and unique; empowering us to have the tools to do the right thing at the right time when we are needed.    This is different than the current cultural message that we should all think singularly and be angry at the same time or fearful at the same time.  We all have it in us to be critical thinkers and to be problem-solvers, but it isn’t encouraged widely or rewarded.

We ask our students to be kind, to practice the “kindness is spoken here” philosophy; but the cultural reinforcement seems to be for the cheap joke or the “just kidding” insult.  It is really important to remember that God gave us all the tools we need to be good people; we just need to guide ourselves and our children to let the gifts be what we use when we are with our “Brothers and Sisters”.

MLK Day Recap

Thank you to all the ASCA families for serving in the community on MLK Day with their children.  If you took any photos, please email them to Amy Drake at amyldrake@me.com. A slideshow will be put together so children can see how our ASCA families served in the community this year.

To receive credit for attendance on January 18, students will be asked to identify their act(s) of service, and to write a paragraph of reflection on how this service has helped others in the community and what it felt like to contribute in this way. If you were able to offer service as a family, take time together to talk about the experience and write a paragraph of reflection together.  The ASCA MLK Service Project Form is due on Monday, January 25, 2016. This gives your children a week to complete this form after their day of service.

Open House for Families New to ACSA for 2016-2017

All Saints will be holding an Open House for prospective new families to the school for the 2016-2017 school year on Sunday, January 31 from 1-3 pm.  We recognize that word of mouth from current school families that are happy at All Saints is one of the strongest and most successful ways in which we can attract new, happy families to All Saints.

In order to accomplish the goal of increasing our enrollment and growth in the coming school year, we encourage you to invite a friend, a family member, a neighbor, an acquaintance from swim club, dance, baseball, soccer, gymnastics…………….. the possibilities are endless.

We are sending a flyer home with all oldest and only students today that you can give to that potential new school family.  If they come to the Open House on Sunday, January 31 to find out more about All Saints for the coming school year, and return the bottom portion of the flyer at the Open House naming you as their source, all of the K-8 students in your family will receive an Out of Uniform Pass that may be used on any day of their choice (other than a mass day or day where you are required to be in uniform) for the remainder of the 2015-2016 school year.

And, the potential new family that you refer to the Open House will have the opportunity to be entered in a drawing to receive their new family registration fee for free – a $250 value!!!!  Only potential new families who attend the open house on January 31st will have the opportunity to be entered in the drawing to win the registration fee.

SO, it is a ‘win-win’ for both your family and the potential new school family to be referred to and to attend the upcoming Open House on Sunday, January 31 from 1-3 pm.  To make it even more special, consider attending the open house with your referral to give them a personal tour of our wonderful school.

Please contact Patty Bajek if you have any questions about the upcoming open house, or the incentive program to attract new school families to attend the open house on the 31st.

Re-Enrollment for the 2016-2017 School Year

A form will be going home this week with all oldest and only students about re-enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year.  A SchoolSpeak email will be sent to alert you on the day that it is sent home.

On this form, we will be looking for the following information:

  • Will your family be returning for 2016-2017
  • Are there any student(s) who will not be returning for 2016-2017
  • Do you have any new students who will be enrolling for 2016-2017 who are not current students at ASCA

All families who

  1. Return their 2016-2017 Re-Enrollment Form by the deadline noted on the form

AND

  1. Pay their re-enrollment fee via their FACTS agreement by the invoice due date

We Invite Your Interest: “Change A Life Scholarship Fund”

As a member of the All Saints Catholic Academy community, you are probably aware of the critical role that Scholarship funding has played in our school since even before we opened our doors eleven years ago.  From the outset, an important element of our vision and mission has been that All Saints will attract and maintain a student body that is both economically and ethnically diverse.

Part of the impetus for this commitment to diversity is that it is essential to our mission of outreach as responsible and caring Christians.  Another part is our deeply-held belief that all of our students’ lives are enriched by positive interaction and growth with schoolmates from a variety of ethnic and economic backgrounds.  Our diversity is a vital part of our All Saints identity, and something that resonates very favorably with both current and prospective ASCA families.

One important part of our overall Scholarship program is the “Change A Life Scholarship Fund” which focuses on attracting and supporting economically disadvantaged Latino students from families that highly value the educational opportunities at All Saints, but could not manage the tuition without significant assistance.

To learn more about “Change A Life”, you can visit our separate web site at http://www.changealife.org/, and watch a ten-minute video that describes the history of the program as well as our growing relationship with St. Nicholas Parish in Aurora, a “sharing parish” of St. Thomas Apostle Parish.  Increasingly, All Saints will look to St. Nicholas Parish to help identify qualified Scholarship prospects from deserving families.  At the same time, some fortunate St. Nicholas families will find that, just a few miles down Aurora Avenue in Naperville at All Saints, a life-changing educational opportunity awaits their children.

Like any of our Scholarship initiatives, “Change A Life Scholarship Fund” relies on funding in the form of charitable donations.  If helping to support this type of Scholarship initiative is of interest to you, to your extended family, or perhaps to a parish, fraternal or commercial organization of which you are a member, please feel free to make a no-obligation inquiry to Tim Traynor, Director of Advancement, at ttraynor@ascacademy.org.

Whether or not charitable support is something you can offer at this time, please take just ten minutes and view the “Change A Life” video at http://www.changealifefund.org/.  We think you will come away with a deep and moving appreciation of the good that All Saints has been able to do with support from some of our truly amazing donors.   And for a concise and informative overview of this and our other Scholarship programs, please access our “All Are Welcome!” Scholarships brochure at our ASCA website, ascadda.org/SupportOurSchool. Thank you for your interest and consideration!

GO SAINTS!!
