Principal's Newsletter - May 7, 2014

Many years ago as we were planning the school, one of the parish fundraisers complained that she didn’t see anything unique about the school we were planning. I was quite upset, because it seemed like she hadn’t been listening. She then responded saying, “Well then, write it down.”  So, I did. The result was TO TEACH AS JESUS DID: AN OTHERS CENTERED CURRICULUM.  Most of it is still found on our website.

Fast forward to some conversations that we have been having lately as parents and as school folks about how to help students, help parents, and help staff create an environment that supports an improved culture of respect. We started looking for some resources that would help inform us and support these efforts. One of the first ideas that came forward was a book entitled Raising Respectful Children in a Disrespectful World by Jill Rigby. The sentence in the descriptor stated, “In an effort to raise children with a healthy view of themselves, parents often focus on self-esteem rather than self-respect. And author Jill Rigby says there’s a big difference. It’s the difference between self-centered and others-centered children, the difference between performance-driven and purpose-focused teenagers.” That sure sounds to me like it was made for us!

Think how powerful it could be if we join together next year in a united effort as parents, staff, and students to work towards a deliberate culture of respect. The students have the Kindness is Spoken Here Project that can be the start and expansion of their efforts. The staff and parents can support them with a united effort to support a higher level of discourse for our children. I realize we are asking them to be countercultural. Together however we can create a far better culture in our school and in our homes.

Where do we start? In a week, there will be a list of summer reading listed for the students. Will you join us with a summer book as well?   I am going to give the staff a copy of Raising Respectful Children in a Disrespectful World for their summer reading and I am asking you to find a few hours to read it as well. If we use this as our jumping off point in this united project, we truly can make a difference and give our children the strength to truly be the people that Jesus means them to be. The project will grow, expanding throughout the 2014-2015 school year, and hopefully into a lifetime of change as these children model respect for others to the world.  Please join with us to make ‘teaching as Jesus did’ a reality.
