Principal's Newsletter - October 1, 2014

I am proud to tell you that I received a letter from Benet Academy this week announcing that four of our Alumni from the Class of 2011 have been named 2015 National Merit Commended Students.  This distinction places them in the top 5% of students nationwide. We are so proud of these young women and the honor that they allow us to share as their formative elementary school.  The ASCA recipients are Erin Hand, Emily Hauser, Anne Marie Hawley, and Maggie Wolfe.   Congratulations!  I know that you will act as St. Paul suggested by using the gift of this accomplishment to do God’s work for our world.  God bless you.

Safety and Security Enhancements for Our Children

As you may know, ASCA’s Board of Trustees and School Board have been reviewing the school’s facilities over the last few months, with a special emphasis on enhancing the safety of our children.  The Boards were advised by our school safety consultant to install a fence around the playground, and also to purchase and install Raptor, the nation’s leading K-12 visitor management software (http://www.raptortech.com/).

We're very happy to report that 16 donors have already contributed over $16,000 which is over 50% of our $30,000 goal!  We need your help to accomplish this critically important project! With large and small gifts from across our school community, we really can complete this project before winter sets in.

Our request:  Please help us achieve our objectives of installing the fence and the visitor management software by making a donation toward these improvements by October 17th.  You can make a donation by sending a check to the school office, payable to ASCA, with “Security Initiative” in the memo line and on the front of the envelope. If you would like more information, please feel free to e-mail Terri Dieter at tjsjdieter@gmail.com, David Dieter at davdieter@sbcglobal.net, or Amy Kiesler at atkielser@comcast.net.

As always, we appreciate your generous consideration.

More regarding ACADEMIC WARNINGS for grades 5-8

Midterms have been issued this week but please remember that grades dropping through the second half of the quarter could still result if the grades stay below a C for more than a week.  Our Athletes’ parents need to go to their SchoolSpeak academic account regularly. Check each class and, under the summary line, you will find their overall grade. This grade must be a C or better.  If it is a D or an F, you need to email your child’s coach (VB, CC, FB, and/or Cheer) to let them know that your child is working on this, and hopes to raise their grade to a C or better before the end of the week.  Please note that this Midquarter will restrict them from practicing or playing if the grade is not improved.  We believe that this will work to alert the coach and encourage the coach to support you in the child’s improvement.

Market Day, Wednesday, October 15th

Our next Market Day will be held Wednesday, October 15th with product pick-up from 2:30 - 3:30 pm in the gym (enter through Door 9).  As a reminder, at least 10% of your pre-tax order will be credited to your annual Family Fundraising Commitment. This is the fifth Market Day which will be credited toward the 2014-2015 school year, with credits applied from March through February. You are encouraged to place your order at http://www.marketday.com and pay by credit card. The deadline for internet orders is Saturday, October 11th at 11:00 pm.  All Saints Catholic Academy's school code is 27119.     Please note that Market Day and GFS purchases at local GFS stores are not a practical option for Family Fundraising purposes, because the credit to All Saints reduces from 10% or 15% to just 5%, and the reports we receive from Market Day do not identify the family to be credited.  Volunteers are needed to help sort and stack the food. Please contact Tracy Coleman at tracytroy@aol.com if you are able to help.

ASCA Book Drive for October

Did you know the most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low income children is to increase their access to print?  ASCA will be hosting a book drive to benefit Catholic Charities’ Foster Grandparent Program from now through Friday, October 31st.  This program allows seniors to volunteer in the Head Start Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms and read to children from very low income families.  There is a desperate need for new or gently used picture books, early readers, books in Spanish and other age appropriate books.  The greatest demand is for Spanish books.  There are over 800 kids in the program and it would be awesome if ASCA could provide each of these children with a book for Christmas as we did last year!  We can also accept adult paperback books which will be given to the low income senior volunteers.  Please bring in any donations to the ASCA office.  If you have a large donation, or any questions, please contact Erika Baka at jnebaka@gmail.com.
