RELIGION

The underlying principle that governs our daily classes is to shape our young people into disciples who act with the mind and heart of Jesus Christ. Our day to day lessons are deeply rooted in Catholic Tradition, Scripture and Doctrine. At ASCA the treasure of God’s word is highlighted and integrated into our weekly lessons so that our students are prepared to hear the “Good News” at each of our weekly Wednesday liturgies. Our students are provided with both content and the tools necessary to explore our faith through instruction, reflection, sharing, and prayer. Interwoven into our religion curriculum are opportunities to explore the lives of the Saints and people of faith who were models and witnesses of faith.

HUMANITIES

ASCA teaches reading and social studies in an integrated cross curricular approach. This Humanities program encompasses ancient history, world and U.S. history. These topics come alive with an assortment of hand-on activities and United Streaming video clips. Related novel studies, particularly of historical fiction, also are utilized. One highlight of the year were Greek plays in which all students dressed for their character, and a "dig" for ancient artifacts early in the school year.

ENGLISH

The focus of junior high English is proficiency in all aspects of writing. The Junior High English curriculum at All Saints Catholic Academy is unique in that it bases all that is taught around writing. Our slogan, based on the Write Source curriculum we use, is "Don't tell it: Show it!" The study of vocabulary, also essential in writing, is activity-based. Reading, which is the foundation for all learning, is also a part of the junior high English program as novel study. Public speaking, also an important part of any language arts curriculum, is included,, in which students are invited to step out of their comfort zone and deliver a short speech with a specified format and theme.

SCIENCE

Students in the Junior High Academy are actively engaged in a hands-on inquiry-based science program known as FOSS – The Full Option Science System. The basic principle that governs this program is that science is learned best by doing. Students at this level are beginning to transition from direct experiences in the lower grades to constructing more advanced concepts in science by classifying, testing, experimenting and determining cause-effect relationships among objects organisms and systems. At this level, our students are learning how to think like a scientist and the focus is on how to conduct an experiment in a lab setting and use the steps associated with the scientific inquiry process by writing lab reports.

MATHEMATICS

Our students use the Everyday Mathematics Program from Kindergarten through the Sixth grade. Fundamental to this innovated program is the underlying theme that students are capable of learning and doing more mathematics than was thought possible ten or twenty years ago. Building upon previous knowledge, and being introduced to more sophisticated ideas in mathematics, we believe that our students will acquire a better understanding of the world we live in. Looking to the future, our sixth grade students will transition into Pre-Algebra next year and take Algebra in their eight grade year.

SPANISH

Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 have Spanish daily to ensure proficiency by the end of their elementary school years. We have chosen the program ¡En español!, published by McDougal Littell, to introduce student to the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking cultures. It is a standards-based program that includes interesting topics, authentic culture, and real-life communication to motivate students to master Spanish. Its instruction uses a balanced approach that practices reading, writing, listening, and speaking, and introduces students to cultures throughout the Spanish-speaking world. We hope that students will become aware of how Spanish is used everyday in the real world.
